Tuberculosis (TB) Project
Requirements
The Enhanced Surveillance of Tuberculosis in England & Wales has been operating since 1999, and records details of all confirmed or suspected cases of tuberculosis.
In North West region, this operates by all enhanced surveillance forms being sent directly to Health Protection Units for completion by Consultants in Communicable Disease. These completed forms are then forwarded to HPA NW RE unit where they are entered onto a centrally maintained database. The data are cleaned and audited regularly, and are submitted to HPA CDSC Colindale twice yearly to form part of the national data set.
Problems with current system:-
Any requests for TB data have to be made directly to HPA NW RE unit
Health Protection Units do not have easy access to their own data
Solution
Make TB data from year 2000 onwards available to be queried online, and also available for download to restricted users.

Avian Flu Project
Requirements
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) commissioned development work for a data capture and reporting system for Avian Flu. The system will be very important in the monitoring of Avian Flu and determining how and where it is spreading.
Solution
The solution is currently in beta testing and will be rolled out end of November. The look and feel of the system was to be similar to the successfully deployed SARS and MRSA systems. The reports from the system will feed directly through to government.

MRSA Project
Requirements
To develop a national system for enhanced surveillance of MRSA Bacteremia. The system had to be easy to use, deployed within 2 months from inception and fluid to rapid changes. Initial audience was 21 Hospitals and ultimately to be rolled out to over 200 hospitals in the UK.
Solution
AN Computing Ltd delivered a .NET solution with a SQL Server backend database. The site is hosted by the Health Protection Agency North West (HPANW) and maintained by us. There are currently over 600 records on the live system and reports generated from the system are emailed directly to Department of Health
